Where to Stay in Seoul, First Time
Short answer: for a first visit, base yourself central and on the metro — Jongno / Insadong or Myeongdong put you a short ride from almost everything and walkable to the palaces, the markets and the shopping. Seoul's subway is so good that central matters more than the exact neighbourhood — so pick your base for the evening you want to walk out into.
Here's what makes it easy: the metro reaches everywhere, cheaply and signed in English (getting around Seoul — the T-money card and the lines). You're not choosing a base to be next to one sight; you're choosing the mood you want at night.
The two safe first-timer bases
- Jongno / Insadong — the historic heart. Palaces on your doorstep — and — the hanok lanes, 's tea houses and craft shops, and the market for street food. Central, atmospheric and calmer after dark — the pick if you want old Seoul out the door.
- Myeongdong — shopping and street food, dead central. Hotel-dense, walkable, on the main lines, ringed by cosmetics shops and food stalls, with market and close. Busy and a little touristy, but the easiest first base — you can't get lost.
The other districts, and who they're for
Jongno and Myeongdong are the two priciest first-timer bases — both around ₩230,000 (~US$170) a night median. If that's steep, three more districts give you the same subway-tight access for a lot less, all comfortably under ₩140,000 (~US$105):
- — young, indie, late, and the best value. University-quarter energy: live music, clubs, cafés and cheap eats until late, at about ₩135,000 (~US$100) a night. It sits on Line 2 and the AREX airport express, so you're a straight ride from both Incheon airport and the historic core. Great if you're here for the nightlife; noisier if you're not.
- Itaewon — international, and easy on the wallet. Food and nightlife from every corner of the world, about ₩130,000 (~US$97) a night and on Line 6; more of a night-out district than a base for most first-timers, but a solid-value one if the eating is the point.
- Jamsil — the family value pick. About ₩125,000 (~US$93) a night, on the Line 2 / Line 8 interchange right next to and the riverside parks; further out east, but a straight Line 2 shot back to the centre.
- Gangnam — modern and upscale. Glossy and business-y, K-everything, the mall and aquarium. Pricier and a metro ride south of the historic core — good for a smart base that's quiet at night, not for saving money.
A few notes
- Book within a couple of minutes of a subway station. With the metro this good, the walk from the platform matters more than which district you're in.
- Two-plus nights in one base. Seoul is a one-hotel city — hopping wastes half a day, and the subway already links it all.
- Consider a hanok stay for a night in Jongno — a courtyard guesthouse in Bukchon is the old-Seoul version of a room.
The mistake to avoid
Chasing a base "next to" one big sight. In Seoul the metro makes almost anywhere central work, so the real choice is the evening: palaces-and-tea (Jongno), shopping-and-stalls (Myeongdong), or music-and-clubs (Hongdae). Pick the night you want and the days sort themselves.
