How many days do you need in Hanoi?

Short answer: two days sees the Old Quarter and the city's icons without a rush, and three is comfortable. But the number that matters is the day trips — Hanoi is the launch pad for Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh, and those are what turn a three-day trip into five.

Here's the shape that changes how you plan it: the city is a compact two days, but the north's showpiece scenery is out of town. So the real question isn't "how long in Hanoi" — it's "how many day trips do I add", and whether Ha Long is worth an overnight.

The two-day city shape

Sort your way around first (getting around Hanoi — the walkable core, the new metro, and Grab), then:

• Day 1 — the Old Quarter and the lake. Wander the Old Quarter ＋ — 36 streets of trade, food and bia hoi corners — and the Dong Xuan Market ＋, then down to Hoan Kiem Lake ＋ and its little red bridge, the neo-Gothic St Joseph's Cathedral ＋, and an evening water puppet ＋ show — an art form that grew out of the flooded rice paddies.
• Day 2 — Ba Dinh and the history. The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum ＋ and the One Pillar Pagoda ＋ beside it (the mausoleum shuts for a maintenance spell most years, so check the dates before you build the morning around it), then the thousand-year-old Temple of Literature ＋, the Thang Long Citadel ＋, and the sobering Hoa Lo Prison ＋.

That's the city. Everything better than that is a day out.

The day trips that add the days

• Ha Long Bay ＋ — the limestone-island seascape that's the reason many people come north at all. Doable as a long day, but it rewards an overnight on a boat more than almost anything else in Vietnam.
• Ninh Binh ＋ — the "Ha Long on land": the same karst towers rising out of rice fields and rivers, done by rowboat, and quieter. A full and very good day.
• Closer in, the ceramics village of Bat Trang ＋ is a half-day, and the cave-temple pilgrimage of the Perfume Pagoda ＋ a full one.

Add Ha Long or Ninh Binh and you've a solid four-day trip; do both — one as an overnight — and you're at five or six.

What changes the number

• Scenery-first: give Ha Long its overnight and add Ninh Binh, and the city becomes the short part of the trip, not the long one.
• History and culture: two city days already carry it; the museums and the Old Quarter's food do the rest.
• Been before: skip the icon loop for the West Lake side — Tran Quoc Pagoda ＋, the cafés, a slower pace — and pick one deeper day trip instead of two rushed ones.

The mistake to avoid

Giving Hanoi four days in the city and none outside it. The Old Quarter is a two-day pleasure, and the north's best is a boat ride away. Decide how many day trips you want — and whether Ha Long gets its overnight — and the trip almost plans itself.
