Day 1

Land softly — a rooftop-garden stroll and a Namba griddle lunch if you land early, then Dotonbori from the water and okonomiyaki

  • MorningNamba ParksNamba Parks' terraced rooftop garden over the station (seed), open from 11:00 — an easy first Osaka stroll by the hotel. Worth it only on an early landing; land in the afternoon and you'd skip this and the lunch below, picking up at the evening cruise and the okonomiyaki dinner.
  • LunchFukutaroFukutaro's negiyaki and okonomiyaki off the griddle, a Sennichimae institution near the hotel (seed) — a first Osaka lunch if you land early.
  • AfternoonOsaka Wonder Cruise (Dotonbori River)Klook: a 20-minute loop of the Dotonbori canal from and back to Nihonbashi Pier, with night sailings every 30 minutes from 17:00 — book one after dark (about 18:00) and see the neon from the water on your first night.
  • DinnerBotejyu DotonboriOkonomiyaki, Osaka's cabbage pancake — Botejyu claims the first mayonnaise-topped one (1946), and it has an English menu.
Day 2

Nara — Great Buddha, deer and the forest shrine, then a Namba izakaya crawl

  • MorningNara: Nara Park, Todai-ji & Kasuga TaishaKintetsu Rapid Express from Osaka-Namba at 08:43 reaches Kintetsu-Nara at 09:21 (weekday timetable) and Nara Park is a 5-minute walk. Do Todai-ji's Great Buddha Hall first, then walk the park to Kasuga Taisha (main sanctuary 06:30-17:30 Mar-Oct) and eat locally; the last direct train back to Osaka-Namba leaves at 23:06, so there is no rush.
  • AfternoonUranamba Local Bar & Izakaya CrawlKlook: a guided crawl through Namba's backstreet bars, the kind with no English menus — the point of the guide. It doubles as dinner; book the 18:30-ish start.
Day 3

Himeji Castle at opening, then Kobe's hillside mansions and harbour at dusk

  • MorningHimeji CastleJR Special Rapid from Osaka Station takes 1 hr 1 min, then it is a 15-20 minute walk to the castle, which opens 09:00 (last entry 16:00) — be at the gate for opening. Allow 1.5-2 hours inside: the keep is steep stairs with no lift, and wheeled bags go in a coin locker. Eat locally near the station.
  • AfternoonKobe (Kitano & Harbor)JR Himeji to Sannomiya is 40 minutes. Kitano's foreign merchants' houses are a 15-minute walk from Sannomiya; drift down to Meriken Park and the Kobe Port Tower at dusk and have the Kobe beef for dinner. Hanshin runs back to Namba in 40-50 minutes.
