Where to Stay in Taipei, First Time

Short answer: for a first visit, base yourself central and on the MRT — around Taipei Main Station or Zhongshan put you one ride from almost everything and straight in from the airport. Taipei's Metro is so good that central matters more than the exact neighbourhood — so pick your base for the evening you want to walk out into.

Here's what makes it easy: the MRT reaches everywhere, cheaply and signed in English (getting around Taipei — the EasyCard and the lines). You're not choosing a base to be next to one sight; you're choosing the mood you want at night.

The two safe first-timer bases

• Around Taipei Main Station — the transport heart. The Airport MRT, high-speed rail, regular trains and three MRT lines all meet under one roof. You're one ride from anywhere, and you land here straight from the airport. Practical, well-priced and hotel-dense; a little business-like after dark, but unbeatable for connections — and a short walk from old Dihua Street ＋ in Dadaocheng.
• Zhongshan — central and a notch calmer. A step east: a leafy MRT boulevard, department stores, strong dining and a good spread of hotels, more relaxed in the evening than Ximending. A polished, easy first base that's still walkable to the station.

The other districts, and who they're for

• Ximending ＋ — young, lively, late. Taipei's pedestrianised youth quarter — its "Harajuku": street food, shops, cinemas and neon until late, with Longshan Temple ＋ and the old town next door. Great for buzz, noisier if you want early nights.

• Da'an — leafy and food-first. Residential-chic around Da'an Forest Park ＋, with the Yongkang Street ＋ food lanes and Taipei's best café scene. The quiet, foodie base for a slower trip.
• Xinyi — modern and upscale. Glossy Taipei: Taipei 101 ＋, the big malls, rooftop bars and nightlife. Polished and a night-out district; pricier, and quieter for old-city character.

• Beitou ＋ — a hot-spring retreat, not a base. The Beitou hot-spring district in the far north is a soak-and-sleep escape. Lovely for a night in a spring-fed hotel, but out of the centre and a poor base for daily sightseeing.

A few notes

• Book within a couple of minutes of an MRT station. With the Metro this good, the walk from the platform matters more than which district you're in.
• Two-plus nights in one base. Taipei is a one-hotel city — hopping wastes half a day, and the MRT already links it all.
• A Beitou hot-spring night makes a lovely add-on at the start or end — just don't make it your sightseeing base.

The mistake to avoid

Chasing a base "next to" Taipei 101. The MRT makes almost anywhere central work, so the real choice is the evening: connections (Taipei Main), calm and shopping (Zhongshan), buzz and street food (Ximending), café-and-food (Da'an), or malls-and-101 (Xinyi). Pick the night you want and the days sort themselves.
