Where to Stay in Singapore, First Time

Short answer: base yourself central and on the MRT, and the rest sorts itself out. Singapore's metro is so good that which central area matters less than being on it — so pick for the evening you want: Marina Bay for the icons and the polish, Chinatown or Bugis/Kampong Glam for shophouse character and better value, Orchard for shopping, and Sentosa only if a resort stay is the trip.

Marina Bay — the icons, the polish

The postcard base: Gardens by the Bay, the light shows and the CBD on your doorstep, and the city's glossiest hotels. It's the priciest area and the most corporate after dark, but nothing beats it for a short, splash-out first visit.

• The landmark: Marina Bay Sands ＋ — the one with the boat-shaped rooftop infinity pool.
• Grand: The Fullerton ＋ (a restored colonial post office) and the Mandarin Oriental ＋.
• A touch less: PARKROYAL COLLECTION Marina Bay ＋ — a garden hotel a short walk from the bay.

Chinatown & the CBD — character and value

The best all-rounder for a first-timer: heritage shophouses, terrific food (Maxwell and Chinatown Complex hawker centres), and several MRT lines crossing. More life and better value than Marina Bay, a short hop from it.

• Design: PARKROYAL COLLECTION Pickering ＋ — the famous green terraced "hotel-in-a-garden".
• Heritage boutique: AMOY ＋ (entered through a temple) and The Scarlet ＋.
• Value: Dorsett Singapore ＋ — over Outram Park MRT, and the airport train home is one ride.

Bugis & Kampong Glam — hip and well-priced

The most characterful budget-to-midrange base: the Sultan Mosque, Arab Street and Haji Lane's boutiques and cafés, Little India next door, and Bugis's street market. Central, walkable, and where the value hotels cluster.

Orchard Road — for the shoppers

Leafy, mall-lined and family-friendly, a couple of MRT stops from the sights. Base here if shopping and a calmer, greener street are the point; it's a little removed from the nightlife and the historic quarters.

• Grand: Shangri-La Singapore ＋ (garden wing) and heritage Goodwood Park ＋.
• Mid / modern: voco Orchard ＋ and JEN Orchardgateway ＋.
• Value: YOTEL Orchard ＋ — small, smart, well-placed.

Sentosa — only if the resort is the holiday

The island of Universal Studios and the beaches, linked by cable car and boardwalk. Base here for a family or beach-resort trip — but know that you trade the city's MRT rhythm and hawker food for a lovely bubble that's a ride away from the real Singapore.

• Ultra-luxury: Capella ＋ and W Sentosa ＋.
• Family beach: Shangri-La Rasa Sentosa ＋ — the island's proper beach resort.
• Adults / value: The Outpost ＋ and Village Hotel Sentosa ＋.

The mistake to avoid

Choosing Sentosa for a first, city-focused visit because the photos look dreamy — then commuting in and out for everything the trip was actually about. Save Sentosa for a resort holiday; for a first visit, sleep in the city on the MRT and let Sentosa be a day. And don't overpay for Marina Bay if character matters more than the postcard — Chinatown or Bugis gives you more Singapore for less.
