Day trips from Taipei: Jiufen, the north coast and Taroko

Short answer: Taipei itself is three or four days — the day trips are what fill out a longer stay. There are four kinds, and you pick by what your city days lacked: the northeast (Jiufen and the Pingxi railway), the north coast (Yehliu's rocks and Keelung), the mountains (Yangmingshan), and the big one east (Taroko Gorge).

The classic: the northeast — Jiufen and the Pingxi line

The single most popular day out. Jiufen ＋ is the lantern-lit hill town of steep teahouse lanes and a sea view at sunset — the one everyone pictures. Pair it with the Pingxi branch railway, a single-track line that threads the valley. First stop Shifen ＋: a broad waterfall, and the old street where you write a wish on a paper sky lantern and float it over the tracks. Then sleepy Pingxi ＋ old street. A full day, and the little railway ties it together.


The north coast: Yehliu and Keelung

Yehliu Geopark ＋ is a spit of sea- and wind-carved sandstone up the north coast — a field of mushroom rocks and honeycombed hoodoos, the famous one the slender-necked "Queen's Head". It pairs naturally with the port city of Keelung ＋ and its Miaokou night market, one of Taiwan's best, for an early dinner on the way back.


The mountains: Yangmingshan

Yangmingshan ＋, the volcano park on Taipei's doorstep — sulphur vents and steaming fumaroles, hot springs, calla-lily and hydrangea fields in season, and easy ridge walks with the city laid out below. A city bus gets you up there, which makes it the easiest escape on this list when the weather's clear.

The big one east: Taroko Gorge

Taiwan's marble canyon on the east coast is the country's scenic showpiece — sheer cliffs, a jade-green river and tunnelled cliff paths. It's genuinely too far to do well in a day from Taipei, though: take the train down to Hualien and give it an overnight, so the gorge gets a full unhurried day. And if you've got longer, the bigger move is to not day-trip at all but keep going south — Taichung, Tainan and Kaohsiung are a couple of hours down the high-speed rail, turning a Taipei visit into a proper multi-city Taiwan trip. The mistake to avoid

Trying to bolt the northeast and the north coast onto the same day. Jiufen and Yehliu sit in different directions out of the city, and stitching them together turns a lovely day into a bus-bound one. Give each classic its own day — Jiufen-and-Pingxi one day, Yehliu-and-Keelung another — and let Taroko have its two.
