Day trips from Singapore: Sentosa, the islands, and across the border

Short answer: Singapore is small enough that its "day trips" are really its islands and a hop across the border. There are four kinds, and you pick by mood: the resort island (Sentosa), the rustic island (Pulau Ubin), the quiet Southern Isles for a beach and a swim, and Malaysia or Indonesia for the day (Johor Bahru, or Bintan and Batam). Each is an easy half- or full day — just mind your passport for the last one.

The resort island: Sentosa

The obvious one, and a full day in itself. A short cable car, monorail or walk from the city, Sentosa packs Universal Studios ＋, beaches, the Skyline Luge ＋ and a clutch of attractions onto one green island. Arrive by the cable car ＋ for the view. Best with kids or theme-park energy — and give it the whole day; it doesn't fold into a city afternoon.

The rustic island: Pulau Ubin

The opposite of Sentosa, and all the better for it. A ten-minute bumboat from Changi Point drops you on Pulau Ubin — the last of "old" Singapore, a sleepy kampong of wooden houses, jungle tracks and the Chek Jawa wetlands. Rent a bike ＋ and ride it, and stay for lunch at one of the island's last few eateries ＋. Half a day, and a total change of pace.

The quiet beaches: the Southern Islands

A ferry from Marina South Pier reaches the Southern Islands ＋ — St John's, Lazarus and Kusu — for the beaches and lagoons the mainland doesn't have. Lazarus's sandbar is the quietest swim near the city. A relaxed half-day for when you've done the sights and want to slow down.

Across the border: Johor Bahru, Bintan and Batam

• Johor Bahru — Malaysia is a causeway away, and JB ＋ is where Singaporeans go for cheaper food, durian, malls and, for families, Legoland Malaysia ＋. A genuine day trip — but the immigration queues at the crossing are notorious, so go early and travel light.
• Bintan — an Indonesian island about an hour's ferry away, Bintan ＋ trades the city for beach resorts and spas. Doable as a long day, but it really wants an overnight.
• Batam — the closer, cheaper Indonesian island, a short ferry ＋ across for beaches, spas and seafood. It runs on GMT+7, an hour behind Singapore — so mind the clock for the last ferry back. A long day, or an easy overnight.

The mistake to avoid

Treating Sentosa as a two-hour add or a border hop as a quick errand. Sentosa is a full day; and Johor Bahru or Bintan means a passport and an immigration crossing — the causeway queues into JB can swallow an hour or two at the wrong time, so pick your timing and keep the plan loose. Don't bolt one of these onto a packed city day.
