Day trips from Kyoto: Nara, Uji, Osaka (and Hiroshima)

24 September 2026 · Wooah

Short answer: Kyoto reaches the same Kansai greats as Osaka — Nara, Kobe, Himeji — plus a couple of quiet ones of its own: the tea town of Uji, and the mountain temples north of the city. Here they are, by how far you go and what you get back.

The classics next door

  • — ~45 minutes. The bowing (then mugging) deer of Nara Park, and Tōdai-ji's Great Buddha, one of the largest bronze statues on Earth. A compact, walkable day.
  • Osaka — ~15 minutes. Kyoto's opposite: neon, canals and street food. Osaka and Kyoto are the classic pairing — a lot of people base in one and day-trip the other, so if you're sleeping in Kyoto, Osaka's kuidaore is an easy evening out.

Uji — tea, and the temple on the ten-yen coin

~20–30 minutes. Kyoto's own gentle day trip: , whose Phoenix Hall is famous enough to sit on the ten-yen coin, plus a riverside town that runs on matcha — green-tea everything, and the calmer pace the big temples have lost. Half a day, easily paired with Fushimi on the way back.

Kobe and Himeji

  • Kobe — ~50–60 minutes. Harbour, a small lively Chinatown, the Kitano quarter, and the beef if you're splashing out once.
  • Himeji — ~1 hour. Himeji-jō, the finest original castle in Japan — white, hilltop, intact. Essentially one big sight, so half a day covers it.

Ōhara and Mt Hiei — the mountain temples

~1 hour north. The antidote to the crowds: thatched among the hills at Ōhara, or atop Mt Hiei. Rural, quiet, and a completely different Kyoto from the Higashiyama scrum.

Hiroshima — the big, long one

~1 hour 40 by shinkansen. Doable in a day, but a full and moving one: the Peace Memorial Park and Museum, and the floating torii of Miyajima. Leave early, come back late, nothing else bolted on.

Which, and how many

The near ones — Nara, Uji, Osaka — drop into single days without strain; Kobe and Himeji are easy half-to-full days. Hiroshima wants the whole day to be worth the ride. One thing to keep straight: *Fushimi Inari and the sake district are in Kyoto*, not a day trip — save them for a city day.

Or let the plan fit it all together: tell us your dates and we'll shape the day trips around your Kyoto days, each as its own well-formed day, nothing crammed. It's a solid first cut you can run with, in about a minute.
