Day trips from Bali: the temples, the terraces, the volcano and the islands
Short answer: in Bali you don't day-trip from the island — you day-trip within it, out from your base. There are four kinds, and you pick by what your beach or Ubud days lacked: the temples, the rice terraces, the volcano and the waterfalls, and the Nusa islands. Each is a driver day or a boat, and — this is the whole game — each pulls in a different direction, so do them one at a time.
The temples
Bali's spiritual set-pieces, and most are a half- or full-day driver run:
- — on a cliff over the surf in the south, best at sunset for the Kecak fire dance.
- — the temple on a sea rock, the classic sunset silhouette, west of Canggu.
- — the "Mother Temple" on the slopes of Mount Agung, often paired with Kintamani.
- — the "Gates of Heaven," far in the east; spectacular, but come for the place, not the (staged, queue-heavy) reflection photo.
- — the holy spring where you can join the purification ritual, near Ubud.
The rice terraces
The other postcard. near Ubud is the famous, easy one (and the jungle swings above it); is the vast UNESCO-listed sweep in the highlands, quieter and grander, and worth the longer drive.
The volcano and the waterfalls
- — a pre-dawn climb up an active volcano to watch the sun come up over the caldera; the island's classic adventure.
- Waterfalls — the interior is full of them: is the tallest and most spectacular (a proper trek), and the one where light beams into a slot canyon.
The islands: Nusa Penida and Lembongan
A fast boat from Sanur reaches the Nusa islands across the strait. is the dramatic one — the T-Rex-shaped Kelingking cliff, and manta rays offshore; are smaller and mellower, for snorkelling and a slower day. The crossing is short but the seas can be rough — it's a full, early day, and a memorable one.
The mistake to avoid
Stacking two far-flung sights into one day because they're both "in the east." Lempuyang and Besakih are two-plus hours out; Sekumpul is up north; Nusa Penida is a boat — chain them and you'll spend the day in a car or on a tour bus, not at the sights. Give each its own day, start early to beat both the heat and the crowds, and don't chase a reflection photo that's really a man with a mirror and a queue.
