Bali food: what to eat, and where
Short answer: Bali is two food scenes in one plate. There's the real Balinese cooking — smoky, spicy, feast-y — eaten at a warung for a couple of dollars; and there's the café-and-fine-dining scene that has grown up around the surfers and the digital nomads, some of it genuinely world-class. Do both. A day can run a smoothie bowl in Canggu, a suckling-pig lunch in Ubud, and a beach-grill dinner in Jimbaran.
The signature: babi guling
The dish to eat first: babi guling, Balinese spit-roast suckling pig, served with rice, crackling and a fierce sambal. in Ubud is the pilgrimage version; in Seminyak is where a lot of locals rate it higher.

The Balinese classics
- Bebek & ayam betutu — duck or chicken slow-cooked in a paste of chilli and spice until it falls apart. (the "Dirty Duck") for the crispy duck; for the fiery real thing.
- Nasi campur / nasi ayam — rice ringed with a spread of small dishes, the everyday Balinese meal. in Kedewatan is a benchmark.
- Satay lilit — minced, spiced satay pressed onto lemongrass or bamboo, a Balinese speciality; does it well.

Jimbaran seafood on the beach
An essential Bali evening: fresh fish and prawns grilled over coconut husks, eaten at a table with your feet in the sand as the sun goes down over Jimbaran bay. is the classic of the beachfront grills.

Eat at a warung
The warung — the small family eatery — is where Bali actually eats, and where your money goes furthest: a full plate is often Rp 30,000–60,000 (~US$2–4). in Sanur has served one thing — fried fish and fish soup — for sixty years; is the old Seminyak institution.

The café & health-food scene
Bali's other food identity: the surfer-and-nomad café culture of Canggu and Ubud, all smoothie bowls, specialty coffee, big vegan menus and all-day brunch. It's a genuine scene, not a sideshow. is the Canggu icon; does the pink, plant-based version; puts the tables out over a rice paddy.

The splurge night
Bali's fine dining punches well above the island: in Ubud is one of Asia's most talked-about tasting menus, and in Seminyak does modern Indonesian in a spectacular room.
The mistake to avoid
Eating every meal at your resort or only at the photogenic cafés — and never once at a warung. The cafés are lovely and the resorts are easy, but you'll have flown to Bali and missed its actual food. The reverse is a trap too: a week of only warungs skips a dining scene that's one of the region's best. Alternate.
